Sawstone Brewing Co. is a folk beer brewery in Morehead built around the idea that the story of America can’t be told without beer. Its brewers dig into deep cuts from the country’s brewing heritage, and its flagship beers pair distinctive American grains and yeast strains to revive styles that faded from public memory after Prohibition, a theme captured in the brewery’s tongue-in-cheek line “Prohibition Ruined Everything.” The goal is to connect past and present through locally brewed beer. The brewery takes its name from the building itself: its foundations date to the 1880s, and its cut siltstone walls went up in 1915. Sawstone is owned and run by brewers Derek Caskey, Nicholas Hollan and Blake Nickell. Alongside the Morehead taproom, it offers event space in both Morehead and Ashland, sells beer and merchandise through an online store and hosts events such as mahjong lessons.
